You might be like what in the world is seed cycling? Let me start with my story first.
If you’re a long time reader on Gastrawnomica, you probably know I’ve been following a vegan diet for over 6 years. I started as a raw foodist when I was 17 and did that for my first 3 years in this lifestyle. Even though I’ve had my ups and downs, and I’m on a point where labels are so not interesting for me, for a while I felt attached and even dogmatic to this kind of lifestyle. You can read a bit more here.
During all these years, I followed a pretty low fat diet, between 80/10/10 and rawtill4. It wasn’t until I started studying nutrition, that I finally understood that all my imbalances were caused by this eating style. I was a firm believer that low fat diets were the best, but I knew inside me that my diet was lacking in certain nutrients even though on the outside I looked healthy and felt that way.
I lost my period for over 5 years, can you believe that? It’s so sad to know that many girls going through the same thing in this diet think it is normal or healthy, because of all the misinformation out there from people who lack on knowledge on basic physiological functions of the body.
Finally, when I started to understand how the body works and how important it is for us as women to have regular periods, I started making changes in my diet and lifestyle. Seed cycling was part of the protocol I followed, suggested by my Ayurveda teacher.
So what is seed cycling? SEED CYCLING IS A PROTOCOL THAT HELPS YOUR BODY NATURALLY RE-BALANCE IT’S HORMONE LEVELS, by including different seeds during the different phases of your menstrual cycle.
The seed hulls contain lignans, which are chemicals that help bind up excess hormones, while the seed oils contain essential fatty acids that provide the building blocks for making hormones.
This protocol should be done according to your menstrual cycle if it is regular, or according to the phases of the moon cycle if your own cycle is irregular or you have amenorrhea. For instance, you would start with Phase 1 of the protocol on the first day of the new moon and begin phase 2 of the protocol approximately 14 days later when the moon is full.
PHASE 1 = DAYS 1–14 OF YOUR CYCLE
Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of your period. This is the estrogen-dominant phase of your cycle.
During phase 1 you will take:
1 Tablespoon of RAW and GROUND FLAX seeds.
1 Tablespoon of ORGANIC, RAW and GROUND PUMPKIN seeds.
Flax seeds contain lignans which will block excess estrogen in the first phase of your cycle. Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc which supports progesterone production and release.
PHASE 2 = DAYS 15–28 OF YOUR CYCLE
During phase 2 you will take:
1 Tablespoon of RAW and GROUND SESAME seeds.
1 Tablespoon of RAW and GROUND SUNFLOWER seeds.
Sesame seeds also contain lignans, which help to block excess estrogen. Sunflower seeds provide the body with selenium, a trace mineral that assists the liver in it’s detoxification process and thus overall hormonal balance.
You can consume the seeds in any form, add it your food or by itself, it doesn’t really matters.
While I noticed changes in just the first month and a half, it usually takes about 3-4 months to see significant improvement in your hormonal-related symptoms.
Hope this info helps you as much as it helped me!
